The Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP) successfully implemented the Improvement of Education Facilities Project in Landi Kotal, District Khyber, focusing on schools located in sensitive border areas facing severe infrastructure and service delivery gaps.

The project aimed to enhance access to quality education by upgrading school infrastructure, improving learning resources, and strengthening community participation in school governance. Special attention was given to creating safe, inclusive, and functional learning environments in a region affected by instability and limited public investment.

Objective

To improve the quality and accessibility of education in border-area schools by upgrading infrastructure, strengthening WASH facilities, enhancing learning resources, and promoting active community engagement through school governance structures.

Summary of Achievements

Infrastructure and Facility Upgrades:

  • Seven government schools were upgraded through new construction and rehabilitation works.
  • Installation and improvement of WASH and drinking water facilities, ensuring better hygiene and health conditions for students.
  • Provision of science and IT equipment to enhance practical and digital learning opportunities.
  • Solar energy systemsinstalled to ensure reliable power supply in off-grid locations.
  • Supply of school furniture, improving classroom functionality and student comfort.

Community Engagement and School Governance:

  • Formation and training of Parent Teacher Councils (PTCs) to strengthen school management and accountability.
  • Establishment of Hygiene Clubsto promote safe hygiene practices among students.
  • Organization of school managers’ conferences, facilitating coordination, experience-sharing, and capacity building among education stakeholders.

Impact

The project significantly improved learning environments in border-area schools of Landi Kotal by addressing critical infrastructure deficiencies and enhancing educational resources. Strengthened PTCs and community engagement improved school–community linkages, while better facilities and reliable energy supply supported consistent schooling. Overall, the initiative contributed to improved education quality, social inclusion, and stabilization in a strategically sensitive border region of District Khyber.
