In response to the pressing issues like environmental degradation and resource depletion in KP, SRSP has embraced renewable energy generation as a transformative step towards sustainability in the region.
Under this initiative, 355 micro hydro projects with an investment exceeding PKR 4.38 billion have been established for electricity provision to 124,006 households in the off-grid areas of the province. A total of 930,085, that previously had no access to electricity, were not only given access but that too at a very lower cost.
Offering electricity at a reduced rate of PKR 10-12 per unit, compared to the PKR 21 per unit charged by the state supported distribution companies (PESCO in the case of KP), translates into a substantial collective saving of PKR 832 million.
Realizing the adverse impacts of climate change on vulnerable populations and the environment, SRSP has also been instrumental in implementing climate adaptation strategies like eco-friendly agricultural practices. 280 nurseries have been established in the merged districts not only creating employment opportunities for 87 individuals but with generation of 133,000 plants, also help contribute towards the clean and green Pakistan initiative of the government.
Furthermore, 279 facilities in water scarce regions have been transformed through solar power installations to provide electricity to 29,118 households and hence use clean energy to power facilities like tube wells, streetlights and solar pumps in the area.
