Project Brief

The Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP), with financial support from The Big Heart Foundation, successfully implemented a targeted early recovery initiative in flood-affected areas of Swat following the devastating 2022 floods.

The project aimed to restore essential community infrastructure and strengthen the climate resilience of affected populations through a community-driven development approach. Grassroots participation, local mobilization, and capacity building to ensure long-term sustainability and community ownership of recovery efforts guided interventions.

Objective

To support recovery and resilience in flood-affected communities by rebuilding critical infrastructure, strengthening community institutions, and enhancing disaster preparedness and climate resilience at the local level.

Summary of Achievements

Community Mobilization and Institutional Strengthening:

11 Community Organizations (COs) were formed and strengthened, exceeding the original targets.
22 CO members were trained in Community Management Skills and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), enhancing local preparedness and leadership capacity.

Rehabilitation of Community Infrastructure:

11 community infrastructure schemes were rehabilitated, restoring key facilities supporting mobility, water access, and local productivity.
Rehabilitated infrastructure helped re-establish access to basic services disrupted by flooding and supported a return to normal community functioning.

Awareness and Preparedness:

4,527 individuals were reached through awareness and outreach activities focused on resilience, safety, and disaster preparedness.

Impact

The project directly benefited approximately 32,284 individuals across the most severely affected communities of Bahrain Tehsil, Swat. By restoring critical infrastructure and strengthening community institutions, the initiative contributed to livelihood recovery, improved climate and disaster resilience, and enhanced long-term socio-economic stability. Community ownership and strengthened local capacities ensure that recovery gains are sustainable and better positioned to withstand future climate-related shocks.
