The Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP) successfully implemented the Renovation and Expansion of Education Facilities Project in UC Ayun, a border-area and disaster-prone valley in District Chitral.The project aimed to improve access to quality education by combining major infrastructure upgrades with strong community-focused and capacity-building interventions.

Special emphasis was placed on strengthening school governance, promoting inclusive education, engaging youth, and fostering environmental awareness to support long-term stabilization and social cohesion in a low-income and climate-vulnerable region.

Objective

 To enhance access to safe, inclusive, and quality education by upgrading school infrastructure, strengthening Parent-Teacher Councils, and promoting community engagement, youth skills development, and environmental awareness.

Summary of Achievements

Infrastructure and Facility Improvements:

  • 12 government schools were upgraded through renovation and expansion works.
  • Construction and improvement of classrooms, WASH facilities, libraries, and IT and science laboratories.
  • Provision of school furniture, learning equipment, and teaching resources, improving overall learning environments.

Community Engagement and Capacity Building:

  • Conducted baseline and endline assessments to measure progress and outcomes.
  • Activation and training of Parent-Teacher Councils (PTCs) to strengthen school governance and accountability.
  • Implementation of Early Age Programming, supporting improved foundational learning outcomes.
  • Delivery of digital livelihood skills training for youth, enhancing employability and future income opportunities.
  • Organization of health and hygiene awareness sessions and distribution of hygiene kits to promote student well-being.
  • Promotion of environmental awareness activities, fostering responsible citizenship and climate sensitivity among students and communities.

Impact

The project significantly improved access to quality education in UC Ayun by creating safer, better equipped, and more inclusive learning environments. Strengthened PTCs and community involvement enhanced ownership and accountability, while youth skills development and environmental initiatives contributed to broader social cohesion. Overall, the project supported education outcomes, resilience, and stabilization in a disaster-prone and economically marginalized valley of District Chitral.
