UNEP head donates Tallberg prize money to Pakistan flood victims through SRSP
Nairobi, 30 August 2010 - Achim Steiner, the head of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), has donated a US$70,000 international leadership prize to relief efforts in Pakistan following the devastating and on-going floods, it was announced today. Mr. Steiner, who called on others to also assist the victims and support the humanitarian efforts in Pakistan, was awarded the 2010 Tällberg Foundation prize at a ceremony in Stockholm on Sunday evening for 'principled pragmatism' and 'leadership that walks the talk'. The value of the award, whose previous winners include former Norwegian Prime Minister Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, is 500,000 Swedish Krona or close to US$70,000. KPK previously NWFP province has been hit by devastating floods after the westerlies and monsoon combined which they do rarely to give unprecedented rains. The floods are very wide spread and from the northern parts of the province to its southern tip. A brief report is as following: Peshawar, Nowshera and Charsadda Districts These districts are the most densely populated parts of the province. Rising rivers and floods in dry stream have affected over 800,000 thousand people. Water is standing in most houses. The godown we run for UNHCR on the outskirts of Peshawar was inundated by water rising to almost fifteen feet. There is water every where. Its is fast receeding althouth large parts of Charsadda and Nowshera are under water. In the town of Nowshera people are moving about in boats in the Bazar. Communication from Peshawar to Islamabad is totally cut off. The major issue at the moment is rescuing people who have been marooned. In addition to this the people face shortages of food, shelter provision, medical help and non food items. Food crops stored in villages by people have been washed away and crops destroyed on a large scale
Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP) After the success of Livelihood centered "Rural Support Programme" (RSP) Approach to rural development in the northern mountain regions of Pakistan in the eigthies, enlightened individuals in the government of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) members of the civil society and academia had joined with an international donor agency to establish a non-government/non-profit organization called SRSC in 1989 to replicate the model in NWFP. Subsequently renamed Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP) and registered under company's ordinance 1984, SRSP is the largest non-profit/non-government organization of NWFP. It has pro-actively promoted people-centered development by improving livelihoods of poor and vulnerable communities, while maintaining the special focus on women, playing a leading role in supporting poverty reduction in NWFP over the past two decades. SRSP has also been entrusted with the task of extending the working of RSP to FATA region.SRSP Organizational Profile SRSP has a three tier organizational structure including Head office, Regional offices and Field Units. In addition, separate project management units/offices are also established to run various projects under the programme. The HeadOffice, based in Peshawar, provides leadership and is responsible for quality assurance, resource mobilization, donor liaison and technical supervision for the field activities of the programme. At field level, the programme is run and managed by six regional teams based in Peshawar, Kohat, Abbotabad, Mansehra, Shangla and Chitral. Each regional team supervises a number of districts. The programme operates on the principle of subsidiarity where regions enjoy autonomy to make decisions at the local level. To ensure that planning is reflective of community needs, the regional and field teams conduct in-depth dialogues/diagnostic surveys in programme areas resulting in preparation of community/village/union council micro-development plans. All the development inputs received by the men or women community members are need and opportunity driven communicated through organized forums at the community, village and union council level. The organization has a proven track record in planning, implementation, management, steering, monitoring and evaluation of community development, improvement in physical infrastructure, microfinance, human resource development and gender awareness and mainstreaming in rural areas of NWFP. SRSP comprises of over 1000 professional/support staff members but its scope extends far beyond, encompassing an extensive network of partner organizations and former staff members across the development landscape of Pakistan. |

Day to day management of SRSP’s affairs and implementation of its strategy and policy initiatives are delegated to the Chief Executive Officer and Programme Managers/Regional Programme Managers. The Board is a balanced mix of representatives from public and private institutions, press, intelligentsia, academia, agricultural sector and industries. The Board meets on quarterly basis to review the physical and financial progress besides guiding the implementation team on enhancing programme efficiency and effectiveness. |

Prompted by the concern that the progress in the fight against poverty needs to be augmented, SRSP has been facilitating partnerships and forging alliances of development partners.
